Some will say a challenge ride in May is too early. Taking on such a ride after a long winter is absurd, the experience 'brutal'. Then there are the defiant few that won't have any of that. These are the riders that believe that whatever the brute can dish out, regardless of how painful those last few climbs become, they will prevail.

Once again the 2009 BRUTE will challenge cyclist with 100K & 200K routes. Routes that will ascend 100 feet for every mile pedaled. Touring on Wisconsin's endless network of paved backroads, the routes will lead cyclists up scenic valleys to ridge lines with spectacular views. Staged in a region where Wisconsin's' Driftless meets the Mississippi, one of our riders put it best when describing the hills as very Mississippian. Hills characterized by long climbs and descents. For 2009, cyclists riding the 200K will have 14 'mile-long' climbs, 100k riders will have 6 'mile-long' climbs. Each climb offering memorable moments of brief stretches of 17 to 23% grades. This year, 200K cyclists will have another opportunity to climb the 'Catfish Hill & Hip Breaker' sequence.

Six rest-stops are planned for the 2009 event. Each stop will offer fruit, real food and plenty of fluids. Sag support is provided & unwanted clothing transported back to the finishing point. Our mechanic Ryan will be on hand to make sure your bike doesn't become your excuse.

Cyclists will find a warm dinner and showers at the end of the ride.

Cyclists wishing to record times can download the course, with lap marks, into their Garmin GPS devices. Upon completing the ride, cyclist can up-load their performance. Lap times will be displayed at this web site several days after the event. The lap times will show who's really 'King of the Hills'.

Additional details

Riders are urged to use caution on unfamiliar downhills.  A few of the downlills will surprise you with tight sandy turns.

All Sag drivers will carry:
    - water,
    - maps,
    - tubes & CO2,
    - minor first aid items such as band-aids and Tylenol.

It is early in the season and some riders may begin the ride with extra clothing which they may wish to eliminate later in the ride. Plastic sacks will be available at each rest stop for riders to label with their names, then seal their unwanted gear inside. Riders can plan to collect the clothing in Arcadia when they finish their ride. We cannot guarantee the exact time the sacks will return back to Arcadia but with support staff constantly traveling between stops, it's likely the gear will arrive back in Acadia about the time a rider completes the ride. We will do our best to accommodate your needs but will not take responsibility for lost clothing.

This year the pre mixed drink located at every reststop is Heed.

Food at the rest stops will include fruit, sandwiches, cookies, water, Heed.  Rest stops will also have Endurolyte capsules and Chamois Cream.

Post ride dinner is a pasta dish, plus accessories.

Post ride showers are available at the Arcadia Recreation Center on Main Street, from 10 am to 6:45 pm.  The shower house next to the registration site is used for winter storage and is not available at the time of this event.

GPS Timing:  .tcx files are zipped and posted on the Brute web page.  Please have these loaded on your device before you arrive in Arcadia.  Lap points are indicated on the map and are positioned to measure the time it takes each rider to complete each route leg. Each route leg will include one timed climb.  Generally timing will start/stop roughly one mile from each rest stop.

If you are riding with GPS and wish to have your lap times posted on the website; your device must have the  following settings:
     - 'AutoPause/Lap' set to: 'Pause when stopped'
     - 'Data Recording' set for 'Smart Recoding'.
     - You may wish to 'switch-off' the 'Virtual Partner'.

There will be a laptop with 'Training Center' at Memorial park. The person operating the rest stop will download the history off your device.  Before you leave, make sure your history file gets downloaded (using your profile, as TC will not allow us to record multiple devices under the same profile). For back up, the operator will need your name or initials as they will then export the file and save it under your name.  Results will be analyzed/posted at the Brute web page Monday evening.

When completing the ride and returning to Memorial Park, please have your name checked-off as 'returned'. I like to know that every rider has returned and that we don't leave anybody walking thier bike home in the dark.

This years our volunteers include a few riders & family members, and  several Lions Clubs throughout the area.

Please call or email if you have questions.

See you Saturday!
