Get
your season rolling in high gear with five days of cycling in the warm,
picturesque landscape of the Texas Hill Country. Spring in
the
Hill country offers endless miles of pleasurable if not fascinating
riding. Use this opportunity to build endurance and refine
technique. This season listen to your pals in the back of the
pack suck-wind and grouch!
Touring
the roads of Texas is a unique experience. Cycle roads that
pass
through pastures, stands of oak mesquite and pecan trees, cross rivers
and crest ridge-tops where every direction you look reminds you of a
scene you once saw in a picture book. Here the roadsides are
dotted with historical markers and buildings from the past, reminding
us of our western heritage. A heritage that is alive
today.
Texas is still a place where trail rides; barbecues and the tough
business of ranching are a part of everyday life.
While
training, you will experience a spectacular range terrain and
scenery. We begin the week in Bourne, riding northwest to a
region of Hill Country where the terrain rolls and roads have very low
levels of traffic. Here, a cyclist can work on tempo,
establishing a pace they can hold for hours, all the while soaking-up
in terrific Hill Country views. Just when you a beginning to
think this ride can't get any better, a 'short but painful' grade will
challenge you to a brief interval out of the saddle. Typically, a days
ride, this terrain will dish-out one to three short & ugly
grades.
Nothing to keep you awake at night. Riding the roads in this region are
an absolute pleasure and explains why it's home to many classic Hill
Country rides. It is the perfect place to spin yourself back
into
shape.
As
the week progresses the routes will migrate south where the valleys get
longer and deeper, the hills larger. These are the roads
revered
by serious long-distance cyclists. The terrain is challenging
as
the roads serpentine their way up through what has to be the most the
drop-dead gorgeous scenery of the Hill Country! These few but
mighty climbs are rewarded with outstanding views and awesome descents
into valleys of cypress-lined rivers with turquoise flows.
Rides
will average 70 miles a day. At a low to medium intensity
this
works out to a 4-5 hour ride. The exception is Thursday's
ride,
where the distance for that day is longer and the hills
larger.
On this day you will face three tough climbs. They're worth it!
Each
day's objective is to sustain a high degree of circulation for several
hours and increase glycogen storage without building fatigue.
The
roads are selected to make it easy for you focus on tempo, riding
position/skills and control heart rate. Although there are a
couple ugly grades, most climbs have an average grade of 6% or
less. Everyday, at rides end, recovery is the
priority.
Drinks and lunch will be available so that you can maximize recovery
for the next day.
Rides
are supported with a sag vehicle and leader on a bike. The
bike
will likely serve a sweeper role but will change as necessary. You can
expect to see sag every 60-90 minutes. Sag will carry food
and
fluids as well as minor maintenance items such as tubes, tires, lubes
and tools.
Major
mechanical failures are taken to a local bike shop and will likely
result in lost riding time. So have your machine inspected,
tuned
and ready to perform. Make sure your chain & spockets
have
little wear since the grades we climb on Thursday are long. Large
cassettes are best for this week. This tour is about spinning
and
endurance, not building strength & fatigue!
